Long ago, in the days of princesses, castles, and magic spells, there lived a king and his twelve daughters. Although the king locked the twelve princesses in their bedroom each night, ever morning their twelve pairs of dancing shoes were found to be warn quite through, as if they had been danced in all night long! The king proclaimed that anyone who discovered the secret of the worn-out shoes could marry the princess of his choice. This is the enchanting story of how the mystery was finally solved.

Author Notes:
For this retelling I combined elements form the French and German versions to arrive at a story that spoke to my heart as an artist and a writer. The archetypal characters and the symbolism that one finds in these timeless stories reflect universal truths that can be as meaningful for children today as they have been for centuries past. In The Twelve Dancing Princesses, the three magical woods that the princesses pass through are symbolic to me of their rite of passage into adulthood.

Reviews:
"Sanderson's princesses are approachable - their youthful vitality in face and movement contrasts effectively with the rich period costumes.... This is a handsome piece." - Booklist "Sanderson's sure hand with face and figure create scenes so real the viewers begin to wonder why they are unable to hear the misic and the laughter." -School Library Journal.
